I never thought being called “fat” would be the thing to bring a smile to my face. But “fat” has a whole new ring to it when these cuties chant it. “Fat” is a common way to shorten “Fatoumata” when the name is said in conjunction with a person’s sir name. My Gambian name is Fatoumata Camara.
“Fat-Camara, Fat-Camara,” this neighborhood gang of kids yells in high-pitched little voices. No matter what, these munchkins run to greet me when I walk through their compound to reach my house from the road. And no matter what kind of day I’ve had, it always makes me smile.
