Perfection: A Santiago summer morning

Perfection: A Santiago summer morning

The view from my bedroom window every morning circa 6:15 in Santiago. No filter necessary.

After 22 years of not being a morning person, I thought I’d never change. I’m literally the girl who hits snooze on her alarm clock every 10 minutes for an hour, only to groggily stumble out of bed a few ticks before 11. That’s not an exaggeration. Sometimes it’s even closer to noon by the time I can will myself from the cozy comforts of my covers.

That was before I experienced a Santiago sunrise.

After my third alarm in 15 minutes sounds (hey, that’s marked improvement from the previous average of six an hour) … I groggily sit up to peak out my bedroom window by half past 6. (again, marked improvement).

The view: A pink haze tints the sky as the sun creeps up from behind the Andes; the moon still in clear view above the city. Perfection.

I take in the scene. I’ve been here for two weeks and I’m convinced it will never get old.

I finish my morning routine and rush out the front door of my apartment building where Rucio (Blondie, in Chilean Spanish) perks up from his slumber to say hello. He’s the stout puppy with golden fur who lives in my courtyard. (Of course I named him. Santiago has a stray dog problem, but he’s one of my favorites.) And with that, it’s off for a short walk past fruit stands and live jazz music in the brisk morning air.

Good morning, indeed.
