Murals in the Making: ‘I want to keep my community healthy’

Gambian students impress me more and more every day! Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of work with the Competitive College Club I started at the high school in my village. The club is basically a college prep crash course for the top 11th and 12th graders. We discuss higher education options, practice good study habits and work on essay writing. Every month, we also do community service projects, which have included reading stories to elementary students and most recently, painting a mural at our village market!

One teacher, who enjoys art, also volunteered his time to help with this project. I wish more teachers here could see how students will rise if they are given the opportunity.

The boys spent all day painting under the blazing sun and didn’t whisper a single complaint. I learned that not only are these students at the top of their class academically, they are also talented artists with big hearts. They did a fantastic job and even used the opportunity to give mini-lectures about hand washing and wound care to everyone who stopped to watch us work.
